G-LOC: Air Battle was officially released to the arcade market in 1990 by SEGA’s legendary AM2 team. The "G-LOC" in the title stands for "G-induced Loss Of Consciousness," a condition pilots may experience under high G-force, hinting at the game's core hardcore supersonic aerial combat experience. Players take on the role of a top-tier fighter pilot, taking to the skies in an F-14-like jet to engage the enemy. Utilizing SEGA's then-pioneering "System Y" arcade board, the game simulated an incredibly smooth and realistic 3D flight perspective through powerful 2D scaling technology. The deluxe cabinet even featured a hydraulic motion seat that pitched and rolled with the aircraft, making it a technological masterpiece in arcade history.
The core gameplay revolves around "Target Lock-on" and "Time Management." This is not a flight simulator in the traditional sense, but rather a fast-paced, time-limited combat shooter.
The green box in the center of the screen is your lock-on radar. When an enemy aircraft enters the green box and the alarm sounds, you must immediately press the missile fire button for a precision strike. Missiles are limited, so try to save them for bombers and larger targets encountered later. Standard fighters should be dealt with using rapid-fire vulcan cannons. The game's greatest challenge comes from the extremely strict stage time limits; every target destroyed adds a small amount of bonus time. When locked onto by an enemy missile (a red "LOCK" prompt appears on screen), you must quickly jam the joystick all the way to the left or right while decelerating with the throttle to perform high-angle evasive maneuvers. Master the pull-up timing during air-to-ground dive bombing to avoid crashing into the ground or sea. Maintaining a high kill combo rate will lead you to a successful mission completion.
