Metal Slug 3 is the culmination of the series in terms of gameplay. It's a fast-paced Run and Gun game where players need to constantly move forward, using a variety of weapons like pistols, heavy machine guns, and rocket launchers to eliminate hordes of enemies. The biggest feature of this game is its imaginative level design: from seaside beaches to snowy mountain caves, from deep ancient tombs to vast outer space, the scenes change dramatically. The game features an unprecedented variety of vehicles (Slugs), including Metal Slug tanks, submarines, camels, helicopters, and even spaceships, each with unique attack methods and defensive capabilities. The gameplay also introduces branching paths for the first time, where players who choose different routes will face different enemies and mid-bosses. Although the final boss is the same, the gameplay experience is completely different, making each playthrough full of freshness.
There are branching routes in the first four levels of this game, and the player's choices will determine the enemies encountered, the weapons obtained, and the number of prisoners captured.
For novice players, it is recommended to choose routes with shorter distances and relatively traditional enemy types; for veteran players seeking high scores, they should choose the hidden routes that are more difficult but offer more prisoners and items.
The game has a rich variety of vehicles, and mastering their characteristics is the key to clearing the game:
Vehicles can absorb two hits. Once a vehicle starts smoking, abandon it immediately. In some high-difficulty battles (such as before a Boss battle), you can deliberately destroy the vehicle, using the invincibility time from the explosion for close-range output or to escape danger.
The final level is the longest and most difficult part of the gameplay. From fighting the Morden rebels, being hijacked by alien flying saucers, to space battles and the final Boss battle, the process is extremely complex.
