《Wario Land》 is a high-quality platform action game developed and published by Nintendo for the Virtual Boy platform in 1995.
This is the only installment of the Wario Land series on the Nintendo Virtual Boy. The core gameplay continues the series' signature features of bumping and throwing enemies, and solving puzzles by transforming with different ability hats. The biggest highlight of the game lies in its utilization of the Virtual Boy's 3D technology. The level design cleverly uses two different depth planes: the foreground (close to the player) and the background (far from the player). Wario can switch between the two planes via special platforms or pipes, which is not only the path forward but also the key to solving puzzles and finding hidden treasures. Different hats, such as "Eagle Wario" and "Sea Dragon Wario", grant Wario different abilities, such as flying, spitting fire, or diving, which are crucial for exploring deep secrets. The game has a total of 13 levels, each filled with hidden keys and treasures, greatly encouraging players to explore repeatedly.
Each level in the game hides four treasures, which are key to unlocking the final ending and achieving higher scores. These treasures are often hidden in places that require switching between foreground/background planes, using special abilities, or breaking hidden blocks. In any place where you see independent platforms or suspicious blocks, you should try using Wario's dash or ground pound action. Some treasures require specific ability hats (for example, the fire of Sea Dragon Wario) to burn away obstacles to obtain.
Mastering the timing and techniques of switching between the foreground and background planes is key to clearing the game. In some boss battles or puzzle scenes, enemies or mechanisms may only appear on one plane. For example, some moving platforms require Wario to be in the background to jump onto, or you need to jump from the foreground to the background to dodge attacks. Watch out for enemies with "exclamation mark (!)" symbols above their heads, as they usually try to push Wario to another plane.
There are mainly three special forms in the game: Eagle Wario (can fly or glide), Sea Dragon Wario (can breathe fire, for combat and burning specific obstacles), and Original Wario (weaker abilities, but used in some puzzles). When you find their ability blocks, try not to transform immediately. Bring the ability blocks to places where you need them to solve puzzles or pass through, and then transform to maximize their effectiveness. At the same time, pay attention to finding heart items in the levels, which can prevent you from reverting to your original Wario form after taking damage, greatly increasing your fault tolerance.
Many boss battles require players to utilize 3D depth. For example, the boss may launch attacks in the foreground, while the weak point is in the background; you need to quickly switch planes to dodge and counterattack. Remember that Wario's dash is the main means of attack, and for many bosses, dashing into their heads is the best way to deal damage. Observe the boss's attack patterns patiently, and finding the right timing to switch planes is the key to victory.
