Sonic Advance 2 is a 2D side-scrolling high-speed action platformer released by Sega for the Game Boy Advance in 2002.
Jointly developed by Sonic Team and Dimps, Sonic Advance 2 was released for the GBA platform in December 2002 by Sega (Japan) and THQ (North America). The title carries forward the classic side-scrolling platformer gameplay of its predecessor. The story follows Sonic as he rushes to the rescue after Dr. Eggman kidnaps Tails, Knuckles, and the mother of the new character, Cream the Rabbit. The game significantly ramps up the pace, introducing the "Boost" and "Mid-air Trick" mechanics, while reimagining boss battles as high-speed chase sequences. It is highly acclaimed by action game fans for its exceptional fluidity and outstanding soundtrack.
Boost and Mid-air Tricks: Running continuously without taking damage triggers "Boost Mode," allowing the character to enter a state of invincible acceleration. Pressing the R button along with the directional pad in mid-air executes Mid-air Tricks, which can be used for double jumps or forward dashes to adjust landing positions and cross massive chasms.
Only Sonic is playable at the start. After clearing the game, you can gradually unlock Cream the Rabbit (who can use Cheese for long-range attacks and has the best survivability), Tails (who can fly), and Knuckles (who can glide and climb walls).
Boss battles in this game are chase sequences where you fight on the move. Avoid accelerating blindly; stay within attacking range behind the boss and use springs or dash jumps to strike their weak points. Be sure to dodge the bombs and laser attacks deployed by the boss.
Collect 7 Special Rings within a single act and reach the goal alive to enter a Special Stage and collect a Chaos Emerald. Once all 7 Emeralds are collected, clear the game with Sonic to unlock the hidden "Super Sonic" True Ending battle.
