Psycho-Nics Oscar was officially released to the arcade market by Japan's Data East in 1987. The game is set in a war-torn future mecha era with highly advanced technology. The protagonist, Oscar, is a combat robot integrated with cutting-edge tech, tasked with infiltrating and sabotaging a massive enemy mechanical fortress single-handedly. This title utilizes a traditional side-scrolling format, featuring visuals packed with detailed metallic gears, pipes, and cyberpunk-inspired backgrounds. Its unique sub-weapon follower system and high-precision jump-and-shoot mechanics had a notable influence on the system designs of later titles such as Super Contra and Gradius.
The core gameplay revolves around collecting "P" capsules and managing your arsenal. A weapon selection bar is located at the bottom of the screen; picking up "P" items moves the cursor, and players must manually press a button to activate the corresponding enhancement.
Prioritize activating "Armor" (increases armor, allowing you to take an extra hit) and "Gun" (enhances main weapon power). Activating when the cursor is on "Option" grants up to two small follower drones, which significantly help cover fire blind spots. The terrain is extremely treacherous, filled with instant-kill gears and traps. When facing the giant mechanical centipede boss in Stage 3, avoid standing on the ground for a direct shootout. Instead, use the floating platforms on either side to perform Z-shaped jumps, guiding your drones to pour fire downward. Controlling jump-dash inertia and keeping your armor active at all times are the keys to victory.
