Gradius III is a 2D side-scrolling shoot 'em up arcade game released by Konami in December 1989. Picking up directly after its predecessor, Planet Gradius once again faces a destructive threat from the core of the "Bacterion" empire, prompting the legendary Vic Viper starfighter to launch into battle once more. As the third mainline arcade entry in the series, the visuals reached the pinnacle of the 16-bit era, and it introduced the "Edit Mode" (Custom Weapon System) for the first time, allowing players to freely mix and match types of Missiles, Double guns, Lasers, Options, and Shields. Known for its extreme memorization requirements, dense bullet patterns, and harsh punishment mechanics, it is widely considered one of the most difficult shoot 'em ups in arcade history.

The game's hardcore difficulty demands perfect memorization and precise resource management from the player.

The key to success lies in the "Edit Mode" at the start; choosing the "Spread Bomb" is recommended to strengthen downward suppression, along with the classic piercing Laser. In the early stages, you must increase your Speed to level 2 or 3 as quickly as possible, followed by rapidly maxing out all 4 Options. Since the Stage 3 Sand Lions, the high-difficulty 3D tunnel stage, and the mid-to-late "Giant Boss Rush" feature extremely brutal bullet patterns, players must master "Option positioning"—spreading Options into dangerous zones to eliminate enemy spawn points in advance.

Furthermore, the Shield's hitbox in this game is quite large, making it very easy to deplete by scraping walls in narrow corridors (such as the Plant or Cell stages). It is highly recommended to practice precise movement and save your Shield for Boss battles just in case. Once you crash, recovering from a "naked" (unpowered) state is nearly impossible, making a "no-death run" the only reliable way to clear the game.
