Flashback: The Quest for Identity is a cinematic action-platformer developed by Delphine Software International and released in 1992.
"Flashback" was a milestone in both technology and art. It used rotoscoping (or hand-drawn frame-by-frame animation), a technique similar to that in "Prince of Persia", making the protagonist Conrad's running, jumping, climbing, and shooting animations incredibly fluid and realistic, setting a new standard for 2D platformers of its time. The gameplay combined precise platforming, environmental puzzles, and tactical shooting. Players not only had to use their platforming skills to reach their destinations but also cleverly use items and switches in the environment to solve puzzles and advance the story.
The story is the core driving force of the game, telling the tale of an amnesiac agent's struggle against an alien race known as the "Morphs." The game's environments range from the wild jungles of Titan to a neon-lit dystopian city, and even to an alien planet, with level designs full of futuristic flair. Managing weapons and shields, along with complex keypads and laser traps, requires players to act with caution and strategy rather than just rushing in, greatly enhancing the game's immersion and challenge.
"Flashback" is a game that demands high precision in its controls; it plays more like an interactive movie that requires precise execution of actions. Clumsy platforming often leads to instant death.
Mastering these techniques and treating "Flashback" as a puzzle game that requires precise timing and calm thinking, rather than a simple action-platformer, is the key to completing Conrad's journey to rediscover his identity.
