"Castlevania II" is an action-adventure game released by Konami in 1987, and it's the second installment in the "Castlevania" series.
The game continues the story of the previous work, telling the story of the protagonist Simon after defeating Dracula. Due to being cursed, his body is weakened, and he must collect Dracula's remains to resurrect him and defeat him again to lift the curse. Players will travel through a world that alternates between day and night, exploring different areas such as villages, cemeteries, and dungeons, battling enemies, and searching for hidden items and clues.
Castlevania II adds elements like dialogue, shops, and experience points on the basis of traditional platform action, making the gameplay richer. Puzzle elements are increased, and players need to gradually solve puzzles based on the hints from villagers to advance the plot. The non-linear map exploration style also laid the foundation for subsequent "Metroidvania" games.
As an early work in the series, Castlevania II showcases amazing freedom and depth on the FC platform. The combination of RPG and action platforming made it quite groundbreaking at the time. Although the game's hint system is a bit obscure, it is precisely this mysterious atmosphere that makes players addicted to exploring every corner. Players who like dark fantasy and retro challenges should not miss this work.
