"Black Tiger" is a masterpiece side-scrolling action game released by Capcom in 1987.
The signature feature of Black Tiger is its unique attack style—wielding a flail, which gives the character mid-range combat capabilities. The in-game economy is crucial; players collect "Zenny" (currency) by destroying obstacles and treasure chests. The shop sells not only weapons with a longer attack range but also armor that increases defense. The dungeon design is filled with vertical platforming challenges and secret rewards hidden behind secret walls.
In Black Tiger, saving up Zenny early on is the top priority. It's recommended to clear out all the secret spots in the first few stages to save up enough money for the highest-level armor. High-level armor not only lets you absorb more damage but also significantly boosts your attack power.
In combat, learn to utilize the arcing trajectory of your flail. Your weapon can hit not only what's directly in front of you but also clear out enemies diagonally above you as it retracts. When facing bosses (like the fire-breathing dragons or giants), don't get greedy with your attacks. Use jumps to dodge ranged fireballs and look for openings to chip away at their health after they attack. Special Note: The stages have many poison gas traps. The petrified wise men will not only give you Zenny but also provide crucial antidotes or tips for clearing the stage, so be sure to rescue all of them.
