Released in 1986, Renegade, along with the later Double Dragon, ushered in the golden age of side-scrolling beat 'em ups. Unlike later titles, its gameplay is relatively grounded, emphasizing spacing and a solid sense of impact. Players can use punches, kicks, and back throws, and can even sit on downed enemies to attack them. The level design is steeped in the atmosphere of 1980s Japanese street culture, and the boss battles are extremely challenging.
In Renegade, back throws and knee strikes are the most effective ways to deal damage. Since enemies often attack in groups, players need to make flexible use of the left and right attack buttons (the game features a unique directional attack button setup). It's recommended to first put an enemy into a stun state with a forward punch or back kick, then quickly move in for a grab. In the train station stage, be very careful of the tracks; falling off means instant death. When facing the first boss, don't rush in. Use jumps to avoid his charge attack and counter-attack while he's stunned. On higher difficulties, clearing out the minions first is key to survival to avoid being surrounded.
