Game Details:

In the mid-90s arcade scene, Pulstar was undeniably one of the most visually stunning titles. Heavily influenced by R-Type, it pushed the boundaries of graphical fidelity and system complexity. The gameplay revolves around the Voyager, an auxiliary support orb that can act as a shield to block bullets or be launched to fire a powerful energy wave. The game demands not only excellent reflexes but also precise memorization of enemy patterns. Its level design is filled with a biomechanical aesthetic and a deep-space atmosphere, and each stage's boss is a massive visual spectacle. This is a high-caliber masterpiece that poses an immense challenge, a true test of patience and artistry.

Game Guide:

  • Master the rhythm of the charge system: Pulstar's firing system has two parts: rapid-fire shots and a hold-to-charge shot. The charge gauge at the bottom has two levels. The first level (blue) unleashes a wide-range attack, while the second level (red) fires a highly penetrating charged beam. On higher difficulties, blindly mashing the fire button results in dispersed firepower. It's recommended to start charging before enemies spawn, employing a strategy of one-shotting elite enemies with a charged beam, then clearing out the remaining minions with rapid fire.
  • The art of defending with the Voyager orb: Your support orb is not just a weapon; it's your best shield. It can nullify most small enemy projectiles. When facing stages with dense bullet patterns (like Stage 3), learning to adjust the orb's position by moving your ship is crucial. Placing it at the front protects you from head-on attacks, while docking it at the rear defends against pursuers. This is an essential skill for navigating tight terrain and surviving boss spray attacks.
  • Memorization and Resource Management: This is a classic "memorization game." The penalty for dying is severe—you lose all your power-ups and are sent back to a checkpoint—so staying alive is paramount. Prioritize collecting "P" items to upgrade your basic shot. When tackling the complex biomechanical maze of Stage 5, you must anticipate enemy positions and switch your support orb to a defensive stance ahead of time. If you feel overwhelmed, use a bomb to clear the screen, but since they are extremely limited, be sure to save them for a boss's final berserk phase.
