Game Details:

Psycho Soldier is an arcade side-scrolling action-shooter released by SNK in 1987 and is the sequel to Athena. This title is a milestone in gaming history as it was the first arcade game to feature a full vocal theme song during gameplay. Set in modern times, the story follows ancient evil creatures that have awakened from deep underground in an attempt to destroy the world. Athena Asamiya, a high school girl gifted with psychic powers, and her fellow disciple Sie Kensou step forward to battle various mutated monsters using the psychic energy waves within them. This game established the foundation for the classic personas and lore of these two characters in the later The King of Fighters (KOF) series.

Game Guide:

The game features multi-tiered platform side-scrolling gameplay. Players primarily attack enemies by firing psychic energy waves and can enhance their firepower and protective shields by picking up "Psycho Balls" within the stages.

The core strategy for clearing the game lies in utilizing the "Transformation System": after collecting specific energy or picking up special items, Athena can transform into a Phoenix, and Kensou can transform into a Chinese Dragon. During transformation, characters are invincible and possess devastating screen-clearing power; be sure to save this for the giant bosses at the end of each stage. Pay close attention to breaking bricks in the environment, as hidden health-recovery items can often be found. In co-op mode, it is recommended that one player handles suppression on the upper platforms while the other clears enemies on the lower level, being mindful of positioning to avoid being flanked by minions.
