Guerrilla War was officially released to the arcade market by SNK in 1987. This title utilized the then-revolutionary "Loop Lever" (rotary joystick) technology, which allowed players to move in eight directions while independently rotating the lever to adjust their firing direction. The game's setting is based on the actual history of the Cuban Revolution; Player 1 takes the role of Che Guevara, and Player 2 takes the role of Fidel Castro. These two guerrilla fighters are tasked with landing on an island and breaking through lines of heavy enemy defenses to dismantle a dictatorial regime. This game became one of SNK's early hallmark titles due to its intense action, detailed explosion effects, and fluid stage progression.
Core gameplay revolves around "rotary shooting" and "rescuing hostages."
The starting rifle is relatively weak, but you can acquire powerful weapons by defeating specific enemy officers; the "S" (Spread) and "L" (Launcher) power-ups are your primary tools for clearing the screen. The most essential mechanic for both scoring and survival is rescuing bound hostages. Each successful rescue awards 1,000 points, but be careful not to kill hostages in the crossfire, as this will result in a 500-point penalty. Abandoned enemy tanks often appear throughout the maps; players can jump inside to pilot them. Tanks provide invulnerable armor protection and fire high-powered main shells, making them the ultimate tool for pushing through minefields and infantry waves. When facing the giant fortresses or armored bosses at the end of each stage, utilize the blast radius of the tank or rocket launcher. By positioning yourself at a diagonal angle behind cover to perform "offset shooting," you can efficiently destroy targets while avoiding direct hits.
