Gradius II: GOFER no Yabo is a hardcore side-scrolling shoot 'em up released by Konami for arcades in March 1988. Set two years after the cosmic war of the previous title, the story follows the remnants of the Bacterian Empire’s special forces, led by the giant entity "Gofer," as they launch a fresh invasion of the Gradius Empire. Players must once again pilot the ace starfighter "Vic Viper" into the heart of the conflict. The game represents a massive leap forward in visuals, sound, and stage design; its groundbreaking selectable weapon loadouts and the iconic "Boss Rush" gameplay solidified the series' legendary status within the STG genre.
The core of this game lies in "weapon loadout selection" and "Power Capsule resource management."
Before the game begins, players are offered four equipment combinations (Type A through D) and two shield types (Shield / Force Field). Beginners are strongly encouraged to choose the Ripple Laser for its wide area coverage or the classic Laser combinations.
Collecting Red Capsules on the battlefield activates the power-up bar at the bottom, which follows a fixed sequence: Speed Up, Missile, Double, Laser, Option, and Shield. It is recommended to prioritize two levels of Speed Up for mobility, then acquire four Options as quickly as possible. Use Option positioning and formation manipulation to clear the screen in an instant.
When tackling high-difficulty sections (such as the rapid-fire Moai heads in Stage 4 or the Boss Rush in Stage 5), avoid staying pinned to the left side of the screen. Instead, use your Options to manipulate hitboxes and neutralize spawn points early. Since the game features the classic "full power-down upon death" penalty, memorizing stage layouts and enemy patterns is the ultimate key to victory.
