Game Details:

This game inherits its gameplay from *Contra* but adds more strategic elements. Players can carry multiple weapons simultaneously, including assault rifles, flamethrowers, and grenades, and can switch between them at any time depending on the battlefield situation—a very forward-thinking design for its time. The level design is a fusion of cyberpunk and biomechanical horror, with stages featuring not only side-scrolling progression but also extensive vertical terrain that requires jumping and climbing.

What veteran players remember most fondly are its unique elevator transitions and boss battles. At the end of each stage, the player enters an elevator and selects the next floor via a voice command—a level of immersion that was incredibly impressive in 1990. Although the character's firing is limited to fixed angles (no diagonal shooting, unless combined with a jump), this difficult restriction is what cemented its reputation for hardcore level design.

Game Guide:

  • Weapon Switching Strategy: The key to success is "ammo management." While the Flamethrower (Flames) has a short range, it's extremely effective against swarms of bio-insects; the Shotgun (Wide) is your go-to for clearing flying enemies at the top of the screen. Don't waste powerful weapons on grunts—save them for large bosses with multiple hitboxes.
  • Master "Blind Spot" Positioning: Since your character can't shoot diagonally, a basic technique for enemies above you is to jump and fire horizontally to match their height. Additionally, many bosses have blind spots in their attack patterns. For example, with the giant machine in the first stage, you can avoid most of its bullets by crouching right up against it.
  • Utilize Ladder Tactics: In areas with ladders or beams, your character can still fire while hanging from them. You can use this terrain to safely chip away at enemies, destroying them from outside their attack range.
  • Final Stage Mental Prep: The game's ending is very famous (and a bit nonsensical). When facing the final boss's computer core, don't be intimidated by the countdown timer in the background; focus your fire on the flashing part of the core. Remember, the game's jump physics are relatively stiff, so make sure you have solid footing on high platforms before shooting.
