A classic sports competition game produced by Konami, themed around Olympic track and field events. As the pioneer of the "button-mashing" genre, it is an extreme test of a player's button-tapping speed and sense of rhythm.
Track & Field was officially released by Konami in 1983. As an early masterpiece of the sports arcade genre, this title features six classic Olympic events: the 100m Dash, Long Jump, Javelin Throw, 110m Hurdles, Hammer Throw, and High Jump. Set in a vibrant stadium, players must simulate an athlete's speed through high-frequency button mashing, combined with precise timing of the action button to complete throws or jumps. The goal is to break world records and qualify for the next round. Its simple yet brutal competitive design made it a milestone in arcade history.
The core gameplay revolves around "extreme button mashing" and "angle control."
Controls typically consist of two run buttons and one action button. In the dash and hurdles, rapidly alternating between the two run buttons is the key to gaining speed.
In the Long Jump and Javelin events, besides mashing speed, holding the action button to control the takeoff or throw angle is crucial. The optimal angle for the Long Jump is approximately 45 degrees, while the Javelin achieves maximum distance at around 42 degrees. For Hurdles, timing the jump is vital, as jumping too early or too late will result in a collision. In the High Jump, you must not only accelerate via mashing but also tap the action button multiple times mid-air to adjust your body angle and clear the bar. Pro Tip: Rapidly sliding your finger across the two run buttons (commonly known as "scrubbing") makes reaching top speed easier than individual taps. Each event has a qualifying mark; you must meet it to continue the challenge. While there are no stat differences between characters, a sense of rhythm is the key to clearing the game.
