Compared to its predecessor, this installment marks a quantum leap in graphical performance and level design. The player-controlled R-9C fighter now features a "Second-Stage Charge" function, the Diffusion Wave Cannon, which splits into numerous energy projectiles upon release, significantly enhancing its area-of-effect capabilities. The game includes 6 highly challenging stages, ranging from an abandoned research facility to a terrifying bio-nest, each designed with complex physical obstacles and visually stunning giant bosses. The game still emphasizes the importance of pattern memorization; enemy spawn points and bullet trajectories are meticulously calculated, requiring players to have not only quick reflexes but also puzzle-like tactical planning skills.
This is the core new mechanic of the game. The charge meter now has two stages: the first stage is a standard Wave Cannon, while releasing a fully-charged second stage triggers a wide-area diffusion effect. The Second-Stage Charge is essential for clearing a screen full of minions or for dealing massive burst damage to destroy a boss's core. However, be aware that the second-stage charge time is long. In fast-paced encounters, repeatedly firing a first-stage charge is often safer than forcing a second-stage one.
This game adds two new lasers: the Search Lazer automatically tracks enemies on screen, making it perfect for clearing out minions in blind spots; the Shotgun Lazer has incredible burst damage at close range. It's recommended to equip the Search Lazer before entering narrow passages and to switch to the traditional blue Rebound Laser when facing large bosses.
In environments like Stage 2 and Stage 4, where the terrain is extremely narrow and enemies attack from all directions, learning to attach the Force to the rear of your ship is crucial. Many beginners tend to keep the Force attached to the front, only to be destroyed by kamikaze enemies spawning from behind.
The underwater environment in Stage 5 features unique fluid dynamics that affect your ship's movement and bullet trajectories. In this stage, try to stay in the middle-to-back of the screen and use the Force to block the biological matter gushing from the front. When facing the final boss, remember not to get greedy. Use the Force's auto-attack feature after detaching it to find the perfect moment to strike the core while you focus on dodging bullet patterns.
