Game Details:

  • Original Basis: This game is based on the setting of "Pokémon Gold" (Pokémon Gold) (i.e., the Gold and Silver generation) and belongs to the Johto region series remake.
  • Atmosphere and Map Changes: Most of the towns and outdoor scenes are covered in snow, and the map tilesets have been redesigned for winter; the surfaces of lakes, rivers, etc. are frozen in cold weather, and there is an ice sliding mechanism on the ice; some of the map designs are inspired by/remade in the style of subsequent official versions (such as HeartGold/SoulSilver).
  • Plot and Event Adjustments: Certain important events (such as the Radio Tower being taken over, the Red Gyarados event, etc.) are assumed to have occurred in summer or spring, so the game's current year is set to a later time in the year of GSC; major events are remodeled or replaced with winter or holiday themes; some quests or NPC dialogues are different from the original, with holiday elements/winter atmosphere inserted.
  • New Content/Gameplay Adjustments:
    •  Male or female protagonists can be chosen.
    •  New opponents/enemy lineups and trainer teams have been modified.
    •  New Pokémon are added, with several Pokémon from the third and fourth generations that are suitable for the snowy environment or style (such as ice-type or visually suitable for winter species).
    •  New moves and items are added, and some items/skills are used to deal with obstacles in the snowy environment, such as ice blocks.
    •  Some of the Kanto region gyms are restored and the levels are adjusted, increasing the challenge.
    •  The mechanism for Pokémon exchange evolution is simplified/alternative options to accommodate the player experience.
  • Limitations and Precautions: This is a fan-made remake and may have balance issues, bugs, or incomplete translation/localization issues; the difficulty may be slightly higher than the original; some Pokémon or evolution methods may be difficult to obtain or require harsh conditions.

Editor's Recommendation:

In this remake, you can relive the maps and stories of the original Johto/Kanto, and you can also see the changes brought by winter decorations, skating lakes, holiday activities, new Pokémon and new moves. For those players who usually feel that the official versions are more conservative in terms of visuals and atmosphere, this seasonal theme and map redesign brings a particularly strong sense of immersion. And it's not just a pure visual modification, but also makes a lot of changes to the plot, trainer configuration, Pokémon species, and game challenges, making the game "nostalgic" while also bringing new strategic and exploration value.

Game Guide:

I. Initial Choice and Team Composition

  • When choosing a starter Pokémon, consider the type matchups in the winter environment; ice-type has an advantage on winter maps, but is also easily countered by fire, water, etc. It is recommended to have at least one Pokémon in your team that can carry fire-type moves or resist fire, as well as a speed-type/status-type support type to deal with skating terrain or icy obstacles.
  • Catch more water/ice/snow type strong or ice-snow linked Pokémon, because some maps and ice-related obstacles are difficult to bypass or avoid.

II. Map and Environmental Adaptation Strategies

  • Pay attention to path planning when ice skating (ice skating surfaces can slide a long way once you get on them), try to observe the map boundaries or obstacles first to reduce falls or accidental slides into enemy areas.
  • Frozen lakes and frozen water surfaces may limit your travel routes, prepare alternative routes or unlock techniques that can break ice, jump or bypass in advance.
  • Use the new or changed paths/hidden routes in the map to explore, the holiday version map remake usually adds side quests or hidden trainers/items, don't rush to follow the main storyline.

III. Trainer and Challenge Preparation

  • The trainers and gym levels in the game may be higher than in the original, especially in the Kanto region. Level up in advance, don't let your main team or supporting team lag too far behind.
  • Stock up on enough recovery items and status recovery items before important gym battles, freezing or status abnormalities are more likely to occur in the winter environment.
  • If the program has a "simplified or alternative exchange evolution" mechanism, you must understand which Pokémon's evolution methods have changed, so as not to wait in vain or waste resources.

IV. Pokémon Species and Pokedex Completion

  • Pay attention to which new Pokémon are added and which are replaced, which will affect the "collection Pokedex" strategy; some Pokémon may only appear on specific snowy maps or during holiday events.
  • Explore new areas/ice-snow related locations (such as Frozen lakes, South Isle/Frozen Shrine, etc.), these places usually hide rare Pokémon or special battles/rewards.
  • Use practice battles (if there are additional practice machines/practice items) to familiarize yourself with the new moves and the attributes of the new Pokémon, so as to deal with unexpected combinations in battles.

V. Mentality and Experience Optimization

  • Look forward to the atmosphere of coldness and festival warmth mixed together: Winter & Christmas themes make the environment very different, NPCs, dialogues, and map decorations will create a rhythm and emotion different from the summer adventure. Slow down, and enjoy the atmosphere.
  • Try more side quests and hidden content: Holiday or winter-themed mods are often invested in atmosphere and small Easter eggs, not pure challenges, and there are many surprises hidden in the corners of the map or in NPC conversations.
  • Accept setbacks in the challenge: Some ice sliding, status abnormalities, or map design may cause discomfort or accidental death/failure, save more often and try different routes/skill configurations.
