Metal Black is not just a shooting game; it's a work of art. Through abstract background textures and incredibly oppressive level design, the game portrays humanity's despair and resistance in the face of an alien invasion. Its core "Beam Duel" mechanic requires players, after filling their energy gauge, to instantly unleash a high-powered beam to clash with the boss's beam. The winner is decided through a strategic struggle, an interactive element that was far ahead of its time.
In this game, collecting energy orbs (Newalone) determines whether you live or die. Don't waste your Beam energy needlessly; sticking to your standard shot is usually sufficient. When a boss unleashes a massive beam, you must immediately hold down the attack button to release your own. At this point, a focal point for the energy clash will appear on screen, and you must repeatedly mash the button to push it towards the boss. Successfully pushing it back will inflict devastating damage. Be aware that you'll have a vulnerability window after your energy is depleted, so when you're not in a beam duel, maintaining an energy level of around 3 is the safest strategy.
