Game Details:

In Formation Z, players start by controlling a small mobile vehicle named "MagMax." As you progress through the game, you can collect head, body, and leg parts. Once fully assembled, the resulting robot is not only massive but can also fire more powerful lasers with wider coverage. The game stages are split into two layers: the surface world and the underground labyrinth. Players can travel between these two layers using specific drill devices. This dual-layer map design and part-damage system (colliding with obstacles only causes you to lose parts instead of being destroyed immediately) were very rare for shooting games of its time, adding a significant layer of strategy.

Strategy Guide:

Prioritize Assembling the Robot:

Your vehicle is very vulnerable at the start of the game, so your primary objective is to collect the "head" and "leg" parts as quickly as possible. In its fully assembled form, the robot can fire multiple beams forward and downward, providing excellent attack coverage.

Part-Damage Shielding Mechanic:

This is a crucial survival technique. When in the assembled robot form, if you collide with an obstacle or are hit by a projectile, you will typically only lose the corresponding mech part while the core unit survives. Therefore, using your extra parts to absorb damage in dense bullet patterns is an effective survival strategy.

Choosing Between the Surface and Underground:

The surface levels have an open field of view, making them ideal for wide-area sweeping fire. In contrast, the underground levels are narrow but often hide more score-boosting items and crucial parts. If your mech is missing parts, it's recommended to head underground to "resupply."

Boss Battle Strategy:

To face the giant, three-headed mechanical dragon at the end of each stage, being in the fully assembled robot form is essential. The boss has a large attack range, so it's best to stay within the left third of the screen. Use your rapid-fire laser to lock onto and destroy one of its heads. Avoid trying to tank its ground-based fire attacks on the surface if you don't have the leg parts.
