Game Details:

Donkey Kong Jr. adds significant depth to the controls of the original. The core gameplay revolves around climbing vines. Donkey Kong Jr. moves slowly when holding a single vine, but his climbing speed increases dramatically when holding two adjacent vines. Conversely, he can also slide down vines very quickly. This variation in speed adds a strategic element to the game.

The game consists of four stages: the Jungle stage, the Springboard stage, the High-Voltage stage, and the final Chains stage. Each stage features unique enemy AI, such as Snapjaws that crawl along vines and Nitpickers that swoop down from the sky. Players must not only rely on their reflexes but also drop fruit on enemies below to earn high scores. This title also marks the only time in a mainline game that Mario appears as the villain.

Game Guide:

  • The Fast-Climbing Trick: To climb up quickly, always grab two adjacent vines at the same time. To descend quickly, however, let go of one hand and slide down on a single vine; your speed will increase dramatically, which is very effective for dodging enemies from above.
  • Fruit Attack Mechanic: The fruit hanging in the stages aren't just for bonus points—they're deadly weapons. When an enemy is positioned below a piece of fruit, touching the fruit will cause it to drop, clearing all threats in its path. In the first stage, you can use the two fruits at the start to easily deal with the pesky blue Snapjaws.
  • Learn Enemy Patterns: Red Snapjaws patrol the edges of platforms in a loop, while blue Snapjaws will track you vertically. On the springboard stage, watch the timing of the sparks and use Donkey Kong Jr.'s long jump distance to anticipate your leaps across wide gaps.
  • Final Stage: Rescuing Your Father: In the fourth stage, you need to push all the keys into the locks at the top. It's best to prioritize the keys in the more dangerous areas on the sides. As you push the keys, watch out for Mario, who will send Nitpickers to stop you. Use the varying heights of the chains to dodge them. Don't rush—a steady approach is your best bet for success.
