Game Details:

In terms of gameplay, this title represents the pinnacle of SEGA's experimental spirit. For the most part, it plays like a side-scrolling beat 'em up similar to Golden Axe, where players use stun rods, flamethrowers, or lasers for melee and ranged attacks. However, upon entering specific buildings or areas, the perspective instantly switches to a first-person shooter mode, requiring players to quickly eliminate a screen full of aliens, much like in Operation Wolf.

The character designs are full of personality: Karen is highly mobile, Gordon packs heavy firepower, and the robot Scooter can even self-destruct for a screen-clearing attack. Visually, the gooey explosions and exaggerated transformations of defeated aliens showcase SEGA's mastery of 2D pixel art. Its dynamic soundtrack perfectly matches the rhythm of combat, and even by today's standards, its hybrid gameplay remains incredibly fun.

Game Guide:

  • The Law of the Energy Gauge: Unlike typical action games, your attacks consume the energy gauge at the bottom of the screen. If your energy runs out, your attack power will decrease significantly. When you see supply crates or trash cans labeled "ENERGY," be sure to break them and grab the pickup immediately. The robot character's self-destruct ability, while powerful, consumes a massive amount of energy and is best saved as a last resort when you're surrounded.
  • Tips for First-Person Mode: When entering the crosshair shooting segments, prioritize targeting aliens that throw projectiles. Also, keep an eye out for civilians or harmless background objects (like phone booths and water coolers). Destroying these can sometimes drop energy pickups or score items, but be careful not to harm any innocents.
  • Utilize the Dash Attack: The dash attack, performed by quickly double-tapping a direction, has a strong knockback effect and provides invincibility frames. In the side-scrolling sections, when facing swarms of mutated aliens, using the dash attack to create distance and reposition is much safer than simply standing still and attacking.
  • Understanding Boss Battle Cycles: When facing the large aliens at the end of a stage, don't get greedy with your attacks. Watch for the boss's startup animation (usually a change in color or intense shaking) and quickly move up or down along the Y-axis to dodge. After the boss finishes a ranged attack, it will enter a brief vulnerable state. This is the perfect time to unleash your character's special abilities (like the female warrior's air strike).
