Game Details:

The reason Ajax holds such a special place in the hearts of veteran players is its perfect fusion of two distinct shooting experiences. In the 2D levels, players pilot a helicopter in traditional vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up action. When it comes to the 3D levels, the game switches to an over-the-shoulder perspective similar to Space Harrier or After Burner, with your fighter jet diving at high speeds as bullets fly toward you, creating an intense sense of depth.

The game utilized cutting-edge hardware technology of its time to achieve smooth background scaling and rotation, which were incredibly stunning visual effects in the late 1980s. Furthermore, Konami's consistently high-quality synthesizer soundtrack breathes life into the game. The fast-paced melodies perfectly match the tense aerial combat atmosphere, making players feel like they're in a Hollywood dogfighting blockbuster.

Game Guide:

  • Adapting to Perspectives & Mastering the Rhythm: Players must quickly adapt to two completely different control schemes. In 2D mode, the focus is on "micromanagement"—using your ship's smaller hitbox to weave through dense anti-air fire. In 3D mode, the emphasis shifts to "macro-movement." Since enemy projectiles have a sense of perspective, maintaining wide, circular movements is an effective way to evade most incoming frontal missiles.
  • Strategic Weapon Upgrades: In the game, you can obtain power-ups (like the 3-Way Shot, Laser, etc.) by destroying specific color-coded enemy aircraft. It's recommended to prioritize upgrading the Laser, as its high penetration power and rate of fire are key to quickly destroying the large fortresses at the end of levels.
  • Utilizing the Bomb's Invincibility Frames: Unlike many early shoot 'em ups, deploying a bomb in Ajax grants a brief moment of full-body invincibility. In 3D mode, when the screen is filled by a massive boss or a screen-filling barrage of bullets, decisively using a bomb not only clears the screen but also allows you to use the invincibility time to break out of a tight spot.
  • Finding Boss Weak Point Patterns: Most bosses have core hatches or turrets with fixed firing cycles. Watch for the moment they glow or their armor opens up, and focus your fire then. Especially when facing the final fortress, staying in the blind spot at the bottom of the screen can help you avoid most of its sweeping laser attacks.
