Wario Land 4 is a premier platform action game released by Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance in 2001.
Wario Land 4 was developed by Nintendo’s legendary R&D1 team. The story follows Wario as he reads a newspaper report about the discovery of an ancient pyramid. Driven by rumors of the Golden Diva’s boundless treasure, he hops into his sports car and rushes to the site. Shifting away from traditional platformers where taking damage leads to death, this game turns enemy attacks into "transformation triggers" (such as being flattened into a sheet of paper, catching fire to trigger a manic run, or being stung to float like a balloon), utilizing these unique forms to solve puzzles. With its exquisite 2D pixel art and a quirky, characterful soundtrack, it is widely considered one of the insurmountable action masterpieces on the GBA.
The core gameplay is a perfect blend of "exploration and collection" and "high-pressure timed escapes."
The flow of each level is divided into two phases.
The first half involves leisurely exploration to find four Jewel Pieces and the Keyzer (the bird-like key needed to unlock the next level).
The second half begins once you stomp on the "Frog Switch" located deep within the level. At this point, the pyramid begins to collapse and a countdown starts; players must race back to the starting portal within the time limit, or all collected treasure will be lost.
During the escape, be sure to utilize Wario’s "Dash Attack" to smash through walls and increase your movement speed. When facing end-of-passage Bosses (such as the grotesque Spoiled Rotten in the first level or the later Catbat), there is no time limit, but a "Coin Gauge penalty" is introduced: the faster you defeat the Boss, the more treasure chests you keep. By learning the Boss's attack patterns and striking during their recovery frames with a Dash Attack or a Ground Pound, you can achieve a perfect clear.
