Super Mario Bros. Deluxe was released on the GBC in 1999.
This title preserves the feel of the original while making full use of the GBC's hardware capabilities. Although the field of view is slightly narrower than the console version due to the handheld's screen resolution, the developers compensated for this with smooth screen scrolling. The game is more than just a simple graphical remaster; it also introduces a world map system, a save feature, and a wealth of unlockables. Players can search for hidden Red Coins and Yoshi Eggs in the levels of "Challenge Mode," and this blend of puzzle-solving and action gameplay greatly enhances its replay value. Additionally, the game's built-in "Toy Box" feature includes fun tools like a fortune teller and a calendar, making it feel more like a feature-rich game suite at the time.
The game's most impressive feature is the inclusion of Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (the Japanese version of the sequel). To unlock it, players need to score over 300,000 points in "Original" mode. Once achieved, a "For Super Players" option will appear on the title screen. This mode is extremely difficult, filled with traps and unforgiving level design, serving as the ultimate test for hardcore players.
In Challenge Mode, each level has three objectives: reach a target score, find all 5 Red Coins, and find the hidden Yoshi Egg.
Due to the GBC's screen ratio, you might not be able to see the landing spot for some jumps. Press and hold "Down" on the D-pad to pan the camera slightly and check below. When facing long jumps, it's recommended to get a full-speed run-up using the B button, as the physics in this Deluxe version are still very precise, and speed is key to clearing long pits.
On the staircase just before the end of World 1-1, the classic "infinite lives" trick using a green Koopa shell still works. By trapping the shell against the edge of a step and jumping on it repeatedly, you can quickly max out your number of lives, allowing you to tackle the more difficult later levels without stress.
