Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island is a premier platformer released by Nintendo on the Game Boy Advance (GBA) in 2002.
Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island was developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development (EAD). Serving as a prequel to the Super Mario series, the story follows the Stork as it attempts to deliver the twin brothers Baby Mario and Baby Luigi. During the journey, they are ambushed by Kamek, Bowser's minion; Luigi is kidnapped, while Baby Mario falls onto Yoshi's Island. To reunite the brothers, Yoshis of various colors decide to work together on a relay-style escort adventure. Featuring a stunning crayon and pastel picture-book art style, the GBA version not only perfectly recreates the original's scaling effects but also adds six brand-new exclusive levels, and is widely recognized as an artistic masterpiece in the history of 2D platformers.
The core gameplay revolves around the "Baby Protection Mechanic," "Egg Throwing," and "100-point completion."
Yoshi does not have a traditional health bar. When hit by an enemy, Baby Mario will float away in a bubble and a countdown timer begins. Players must pop the bubble to rescue Mario before the countdown (max 30 seconds) reaches zero, or they will lose a life.
Yoshi's moveset is incredibly diverse: holding the jump button triggers the "Flutter Jump" to extend airtime, while pressing down in mid-air performs a "Ground Pound" to smash through specific terrain.
Core combat and puzzle-solving rely on the "Egg System"—swallowing enemies with the tongue and pressing down transforms them into eggs. Pressing the R button brings up a targeting reticle; time your press to the right trajectory to throw an egg, which can be used to hit distant items or defeat enemies. To achieve a perfect 100-point rank, you must collect all 20 Red Coins, 5 Flowers, and finish the level with a full 30-second Star count. When facing the giant bosses enlarged by Kamek's magic, look for special objects in the environment (such as Giant Eggs or bounce mechanisms) and utilize ricochet shots or target weak points like the boss's exposed belly to clear the stage.
