"Samurai Shodown" is the progenitor of weapon-based fighting games, launched by SNK in 1993.
The core of the Samurai Shodown series lies in the realism of its blade-to-blade duels. Players must not only control their character's movement and jumps but also precisely calculate distance and attack timing. The game features a unique "weapon clash" mechanic and a "Rage Gauge" system. When the Rage Gauge is full, the character's attack power increases significantly, allowing them to unleash a game-changing "Weapon-Flipping Technique." Additionally, the game's attention to detail is outstanding, with elements like the referee (Kuroko) officiating in the background, couriers delivering items, and the tense feeling of fighting bare-handed after being disarmed all greatly enriching the game's depth.
Samurai Shodown is not a game where you can button-mash. While a Heavy Slash (typically C or A+B) deals massive damage, it has very long recovery frames, leaving you wide open for a devastating counter-attack if it whiffs. It's better to poke from mid-range with Medium Slashes, wait for an opponent's opening, and then land a decisive blow.
Once your Rage Gauge is full, your attack power is significantly boosted, making it the best time to pressure your opponent. If you are being pinned down, consider using the "Rage Explosion." This not only knocks your opponent away but also grants you temporary invincibility and unlocks your ultimate attack. However, be aware that once the Rage Explosion ends, you will lose your Rage Gauge for the remainder of the round.
While blocking an opponent's attack, you can perform a "parry" by quickly tapping forward at the moment of impact. If you're unlucky enough to be disarmed, don't panic. Time it for the moment an opponent's Heavy Slash is about to connect and input the special command to perform a "Bare-handed Blade Catch," allowing you to seize back the initiative and knock your opponent to the ground.
A courier will occasionally appear in the background to throw meat or a bomb. Catching the meat restores a small amount of health, but be careful of the bomb's splash damage. Using dodges or rolls is also a key skill for avoiding an opponent's long-range item attacks.
