At a time when Street Fighter dominated the market, Red Earth forged a completely different path. It was more like a "fighting game-style Boss Rush." Instead of repeatedly sparring with human opponents, players faced off against intimidating giant creatures like griffins and hydras. The game introduced an experience and level system, where treasure chests obtained in battle could increase attack and defense stats and unlock new special moves. Furthermore, it also featured a multiple-ending system and a password save function, which were very rare settings for arcade cabinets at the time. Its exceptionally beautiful visual presentation remains a pinnacle of pixel art, even when viewed 30 years later.
Unlike purely skill-based fighting games, "levels" are crucial in this title. It's recommended to perform combos in the early stages to get more treasure chests. Leveling up not only increases your maximum health but, more importantly, unlocks elemental attacks (like Fire, Ice, and Lightning). Exploiting elemental weaknesses against different bosses will make your battles much easier. For example, when facing an ice-elemental monster, using Leo the Lion King's fire-enchanted attacks can deal massive burst damage.
The AI in this game is extremely advanced; reckless attacking will get you caught by the bosses' large-hitbox grabs. Learning to use the "Mystic Break" is key to beating the game. Press forward and an attack button the instant you successfully block an opponent's attack to perform a quick counter. At the same time, manage your blue "Energy Orbs" wisely. These orbs are not only consumed to unleash super moves but are also the key to triggering elemental combos.
