Super Volleyball is a classic arcade volleyball game released by Video System in 1991.
Super Volley '91 was officially released to the arcade market by Video System in 1991. This title is the sequel to the company's classic sports series, Super Volleyball. Set on the intense stage of international volleyball championships, players can choose from eight of the world's top men's national teams—including China, the USA, Japan, and Italy—to compete for the world title. The game features a unique side-view perspective that accurately recreates realistic volleyball tactics such as receiving, setting, and front-row spikes. With vibrant colors and fluid character animations, it perfectly captures the high-stakes tension of competitive sports.
The core gameplay revolves around mastering the timing of serves, receives, and spikes. Controls primarily involve using the directional keys combined with two buttons (A button to hit/spike, B button to block).
For the serve, press the A button right when the character tosses the ball to its highest point to perform a devastating "Power Jump Serve." On defense, watch the opposing spiker's jump position; move your defenders in advance and press the B button to perform a double block, which can score points directly or reduce the ball's speed. The primary offensive strategies are "quick attacks" and "time-lag plays." Once the first pass is in position, press Forward + A at the moment the setter passes the ball to launch a net-front quick attack that can bypass the defense. When facing high-AI teams in the later stages (such as the USA or Italy), avoid hitting blindly; instead, use "angled spikes" (hold Up or Down while spiking) to drive the ball into defensive gaps. Maintaining a steady offensive and defensive rhythm will ensure a smooth path to victory.
