Game Details:

As an arcade masterpiece from 1988, '88 Games not only featured enhanced graphics but also introduced events with greater depth and variety. The game includes nine major events, such as the 100m Dash, Long Jump, 400m Relay, Pole Vault, and 400m Freestyle. Each event demands different skills from the player: some require explosive button-mashing speed (like the dash), while others demand perfect timing (like the Long Jump and Pole Vault). The game's animations were outstanding for its time, with athletes' victory celebrations and dejected expressions after defeat being incredibly lifelike. This title not only tests the limits of a player's physical dexterity, but its qualifying scores are also highly challenging, allowing only those who have truly mastered the techniques to reach the final podium.

Game Guide:

  • Basic Controls: The arcade version typically consists of two "Run" buttons and one "Action" button. The key is to rapidly alternate between the two run buttons, not just mash a single one. This alternating frequency makes the character's speed meter fill up faster.
  • 100m Dash: The start is crucial. Press the button the instant the countdown ends; pressing too early results in a false start. Maintain a consistently high tapping speed during the race. No special actions are needed before the finish line—just sprint with all your might.
  • Long Jump Tips: Running speed is fundamental, but the take-off angle before the board determines your final score. The ideal take-off angle is typically between 42° and 45°. Hold the Action button to adjust the angle and release to set it. Be careful not to cross the foul line.
  • Pole Vault: This is a multi-stage event. First, you need to build up speed. When the pole is planted in the box, hold the Action button to build up power. Release it the moment the pole bends to its maximum and recoils, then tap buttons repeatedly to get your character over the bar. Timing is more important than speed here.
  • 400m Freestyle: Pay attention to your breathing rhythm. Players must not only mash the directional buttons to swim but also press the Action button to take a breath when the character's head is above water. Otherwise, your character will run out of stamina and slow down significantly.
  • Advanced Tip: Watch the power meter at the bottom of the screen. In all throwing or jumping events, launching your jump/throw when the meter is at its peak is the only way to get the gold medal.
