Game Details:

This title originally debuted in arcades in 1995 and was later ported to multiple home consoles. Compared to MK3, the Ultimate version not only addressed character balance issues but also greatly expanded the playable roster, including the classic ninja characters. The game introduced a "Run" button and a combo system, making the pace of combat exceptionally intense. In addition to its core fighting gameplay, the game also retained a wealth of hidden elements, such as randomly appearing hidden bosses, a complex password system, and a variety of finishing moves. Its dark atmosphere and hardcore fighting mechanics secured it a prominent place in the early days of esports.

Strategy Guide:

  • Running and Pressure: Unlike traditional fighting games, this title has a dedicated "Run" button. Skillfully using the run can quickly close the distance, and when combined with a crouching low punch (D1) or crouching low kick (D4), it creates powerful pressure that keeps the opponent from getting up.
  • Combo System: Each character has preset combo strings. Beginners are advised to first practice basic universal combos like "High Punch - High Punch - Low Punch - Back Kick." Rhythm is key; inputs must be entered quickly and precisely, without waiting for the full animation of one move to finish before inputting the next.
  • Character-Specific Tips:
    • Scorpion: His gameplay revolves around the use of his Spear. Hitting an airborne opponent with the spear is a guaranteed hit. His teleport is effective against zoners, but leaves him extremely vulnerable on block due to its long recovery.
    • Sub-Zero: Famous for his classic freeze-based playstyle. After hitting with his Ice Ball, you should immediately follow up with a high-damage combo rather than a simple heavy attack.
  • Corner Game: When an opponent is in the corner, they cannot retreat. After landing an uppercut, you can follow up with an aerial special move for a juggle. This is the optimal time to inflict maximum damage.
  • Triggering Finishers: Each character's Fatality has specific distance requirements (close, sweep, or full screen). After "Finish Him/Her" appears, you must input the command correctly within the time limit. It's recommended to memorize the button sequences for your most-used characters in practice mode.
  • Using Clones and Summons: Certain characters can create illusions. Learning to use these summons to set up multi-hit attacks can greatly confuse the opponent's guard and create mix-up opportunities.
