Game Details:

This game strikes a perfect balance between responsive action and tactical foresight. The protagonist, Hayate, possesses flashy ninjutsu and an endless supply of shuriken, but is extremely fragile, dying in a single hit. Your ninja dog is your greatest tactical partner: when you hold down the attack button, the dog will lunge at distant enemies, pinning them down to create an opening for you to strike.

Visually, the game makes full use of the Sega System 18 arcade board's capabilities. From a burning downtown to a modern space shuttle launch site, the backgrounds are layered and distinct. The "Shuriken Toss" bonus stage after each level is especially noteworthy, using a first-person perspective where players must quickly shoot down ninjas leaping from the distance. This fast-paced reflex test is incredibly thrilling.

Strategy Guide:

  • The Ninja Dog's "Lure and Control": This is the key to beating the game. When facing machine gunners with shields or behind cover, don't charge in recklessly. From a safe distance, hold the attack button, and your dog will rush forward to bite the enemy. While the enemy is struggling, quickly move in for a melee attack or throw a shuriken. Note: If the dog is hit, it will revert to a small pup and be temporarily disabled, requiring time to recover.
  • Invincibility Frames from Platform Switching: Like in the previous game, you can switch between upper and lower platforms by pressing "Up + Jump" or "Down + Jump." For a brief moment during this animation, the protagonist is invincible. Learning to use this maneuver to dodge bullets is often safer than moving left or right.
  • Timing Your Ninjutsu: You can only use your ninjutsu (a screen-clearing special) once per level. Don't use it right at the start; save it for areas with the highest enemy density that are difficult to navigate. When activated, it instantly clears all minor enemies from the screen, and the protagonist is invincible during the animation.
  • The Rhythm of Boss Fights: This game's bosses are massive and have fixed attack patterns. For example, with the armored warrior in the first stage, the key is to watch for the opening when he reloads. All boss fights require you to stay calm, avoid getting greedy with your attacks, use the dog to draw aggro (if the arena allows), and strike their core weak points.
  • Prioritize Disarming Bombs: Certain stages require you to find all the bombs within a time limit. Don't get bogged down in combat; use the long-range advantage of your shuriken to clear enemies in your path and get to the bombs quickly.
