In the golden age of arcades, this title amazed players with its unique stereoscopic visual technology (some cabinets were equipped with LCD shutter glasses for true 3D). The gameplay is very hardcore; players must not only complete the track within the time limit but also dodge other vehicles and obstacles at high speeds. Its most acclaimed feature was the "Pit-in" system: if the car caught fire from a collision or encountered rain, players had to drive into the pit stop. Otherwise, the car's performance would plummet until it was wrecked. This simplified simulation of real-world racing rules made it stand out among the cookie-cutter racing games of its time.
At the start of the race, pay attention to the tachometer. Pressing the accelerator at the exact moment the countdown ends will grant you a starting boost. Since the early stages are crowded with traffic, quickly move to an outside lane to overtake after the start, avoiding collisions in the pack that will cause you to lose speed.
When a "Rain" warning appears or the sky darkens, ground friction will decrease rapidly. At this point, you must look for an opportunity to enter the pit stop and change to Wet Tires. If you don't change tires, the car will skid severely when cornering and is highly likely to crash. Similarly, if your car starts to smoke or catch fire from a collision, you must also pit for repairs, or it will explode and force you out of the race.
This game's low camera angle requires you to anticipate turns well in advance. Before entering a corner, ease off the accelerator (or lightly tap the brakes) to maintain control and avoid trying to take the turn at top speed. Furthermore, because the game features a damage system, it's best to overtake on the inside. If a car in front suddenly changes lanes, it's better to slow down than to risk a collision.
On long straights, you can gain a small boost to your top speed by taking advantage of the "aerodynamic slipstream" effect from driving directly behind another car. This can often be the deciding factor in crossing the finish line during a tight Final Lap.
