Game Details:

In the history of fighting games, Breakers and its enhanced version, Breakers Revenge, are often considered underrated gems. The game uses a standard six-button control scheme (or a four-button Neo Geo layout), with a system design heavily influenced by Street Fighter II, but with a faster pace. Each character has a unique backstory and special moves, such as the Chinese martial artist Piela and the Arabian swordsman Alsion III. The game's core appeal lies in its extremely forgiving Cancel system, allowing players to easily link normal attacks into special moves, and even Super Moves. Additionally, the game's unique "mirror match" feature (where a character's name and color change significantly when fighting against themselves) was a distinctive characteristic for its time.

Game Guide:

  • Character Recommendations: If you're a beginner, Sho is the best character to start with. His moveset is similar to Ryu or Ken, featuring a standard dragon punch and projectile with excellent priority. For players who prefer speed, Piela's aerial pressure and fast combos can put immense pressure on opponents.
  • Mastering Combo Logic: The combo rhythm in Breakers is slightly faster than other fighting games from the same era. The core technique is to start with light attacks. At close range, poke with 2-3 light punches or kicks and, upon confirming they aren't blocked, quickly input a special move. Since the game has a generous input buffer, it's recommended to practice the timing of linking normal attacks into special moves.
  • Super Meter and Super Moves: The meter at the bottom of the screen builds up as you attack and take damage. When the meter is full and flashing, you can unleash a powerful Super Move. In a real match, it's best to save your meter for counters or to use it in a basic combo after a successful punish to maximize your damage output.
  • Defense and Counter (Guard Cancel): Don't just defend passively. Use the pushback during block stun to create distance and look for opportunities to punish opponents during the recovery frames of their moves. Against jump-in attacks, most characters' crouching heavy punch is an excellent anti-air.
