In *Amidar*, levels alternate between two characters: on odd-numbered levels, you are a gorilla collecting coconuts while avoiding patrolling natives; on even-numbered levels, you become a paint roller, filling in boxes and dodging rolling pigs. The game's unique feature is that all enemies move according to the "Amidar" rule—they must turn whenever they encounter a horizontal path.
This means that while enemy routes may seem chaotic, they are actually completely predictable. Players must not only fill in all the boxes on the map but also use the limited-per-level "Jump" ability to temporarily stun enemies and escape. When the player fills the four corner boxes of the map, a brief period of invincibility is triggered, allowing you to turn the tables and eat the enemies for a high score. This thrill of switching between offense and defense was remarkably ingenious for an era of limited hardware capabilities.
