Game Details:

In the history of arcade and console gaming, Altered Beast is renowned for its visually stunning "transformation" animations. In each stage, players must defeat flashing white two-headed wolves to obtain Power Orbs, undergoing transformations from a "powered-up" state to a full "beast form."

The game features five stages, each with a unique transformation: the Werewolf, which can shoot fireballs; the Weredragon, which can unleash electric shocks; the Werebear, which can petrify enemies; the agile Weretiger; and the ultimate Golden Werewolf form. Although its pacing may feel a bit sluggish by modern standards, its unique combat feedback and pixelated depictions of Greek mythological monsters (like Medusa and Cerberus) give the game a heavy, epic feel. It was also one of the first games to showcase the concept of "bio-mutant attacks."

Game Guide:

  • Seize the Power Orbs: The core objective in each stage is to defeat the "flashing white two-headed wolves." This is the only way to get Power Orbs. You must prioritize taking them out as the screen scrolls, because missing even one might prevent you from achieving the final transformation before the boss. If you haven't reached your final form, Hades will refuse to fight you and simply float away, forcing you to continue clearing out minions in a loop.
  • Combat Guide for Each Form:
    • Werewolf (Stage 1): Excels at linear fireball attacks and a horizontal dash (Flash Attack), making it suitable for mid-range crowd control.
    • Weredragon (Stage 2): Possesses the ability to fly and a screen-wide electric shock. This is the best form for survival; use its collision damage and surrounding electric field to easily clear flying minions.
    • Werebear (Stage 3): Has a short attack range, but its breath attack can petrify enemies, allowing them to be shattered in a single hit.
  • Boss Strategy: Stage 1 Boss (Mud Monster): Don't jump around randomly. Stand at the edge of the screen and continuously shoot fireballs. When it throws its head, use the Werewolf's slide to perfectly dodge it.
  • Maintain Air Superiority: In Weredragon form, always stay flying at the top of the screen to avoid most ground traps and projectiles.
  • Score Farming Tip: If you're aiming for a high score, after transforming into your final form, you can intentionally avoid killing the boss and farm points from the minions it summons. However, be sure to manage your health.
