WarioWare: Twisted! is a collection of quirky and creative microgames released by Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance in 2004.
WarioWare: Twisted! was co-developed by Nintendo and Intelligent Systems. The story follows Wario, who, after breaking his own handheld console, stumbles upon a peculiar mechanism that allows games to be played through rotation. He once again rallies his friends from Diamond City to develop a brand-new "rotary console." As one of the most revolutionary entries in the series, the cartridge stunned the industry upon its release by featuring a built-in physical gyro sensor and a rumble motor. The game perfectly upholds the series' fast-paced "5-second rule" tradition, pushing motion controls and absurd, humorous pixel art to their absolute limits.
The core gameplay revolves around "physical rotation" and "split-second reactions."
Unlike traditional GBA games, the vast majority of microgames do not require the D-pad. Instead, you must physically rotate your device (or a motion-configured emulator) as if you were turning a steering wheel.
The microgames are primarily divided into four rotation modes:
Slight tilting, full 360-degree spins, maintaining balance, and complex actions combined with the A button. The key to winning lies in keeping your hands steady. Before starting a level, hold the handheld level and centered to your body to serve as the "calibration origin." When facing Mona's block-pushing stages or 9-Volt's Nintendo retro-tribute stages, watch the countdown and on-screen prompts, then tilt the device decisively and swiftly. Every few stages, a "Boss Stage" with no time limit will appear. These require great patience; use rotation to control character movement and dodge obstacles. As long as you keep up with the rhythm, you can easily clear the stage and unlock a massive collection of bizarre "Souvenirs."
