Toki is a classic side-scrolling action-platformer that was originally released for arcades in 1989.
Originally developed by TAD Corporation, Toki became a sensation in arcades in the early 1990s thanks to its quirky setting. It was later ported to multiple platforms like the NES, Genesis, and Amiga, and has received an HD remake in recent years. The core gameplay combines ranged attacks with platforming. The protagonist, Toki, moves slowly, but he can power up his spit projectiles by collecting different items, such as a three-way shot, fireballs, or a powerful spread shot. The game's art style is filled with the fantasy and bizarre elements popular at the time, and its boss battles are extremely challenging, requiring players to have excellent pattern memorization and quick reflexes.
Toki is not a game you can just rush through recklessly. Since Toki moves relatively slowly and his jumps feel a bit heavy, players must get into the habit of a "stop-and-pop" playstyle. Before entering a new screen, check above and in the corners for hidden enemies (like spiders that suddenly drop down or flying birds).
Patience is the key to beating the game. Since the game uses a "one-hit-kill" mechanic, don't get greedy and try to rush. Make sure to clear all visible threats before attempting any platforming.
