Super Sidekicks is the first competitive soccer game released by SNK on the NEOGEO platform in 1992, and the pioneering title of one of the most influential soccer series in arcade history.
As the first installment in the series, Super Sidekicks established the franchise's tone of being "hardcore, action-packed, and fast-paced." The game didn't pursue complex simulation management or formation systems, instead focusing its core on the intensity of the offense and explosive moments. On the hardware of the time, SNK utilized powerful bitmap processing technology to achieve extremely smooth scaling effects, making the transition between distant and close-up views of the field feel very natural.
The game's most acclaimed design was the visual feedback after a goal: when the ball hit the back of the net, the screen would cut to a close-up of celebrating players or a roaring crowd, greatly enhancing the sense of immersion. While it lacked the complex super shots of later entries, the shots in this game felt incredibly powerful, and the slide tackles on defense were crisp and clean, perfectly embodying the "arcade-style" spirit of sports.
Because the central defense in the original Super Sidekicks is very packed, the most reliable way to score is by crossing from the wings. Use a fast player to cut in from the side, observe your teammate's position near the edge of the penalty area, and send the ball into the center with a long pass (B button). While the ball is in the air, quickly press the shoot button (A button) for a high chance of triggering a header or a spectacular volley.
After entering the penalty area, a flashing "SHOOT" prompt will appear in the center of the screen. This indicates the optimal shooting spot. At this moment, hold a direction while pressing the shoot button to aim the ball towards the corners of the goal. Be careful not to shoot when you are too close to the goalkeeper, or they will easily save it.
When defending, the A button performs a shoulder charge, while the B button is a powerful slide tackle. The referee's calls in the original game are relatively lenient, but slide tackling inside the penalty area still carries a high risk of conceding a penalty kick. It's recommended to frequently use the A button to harass opponents and disrupt their passing rhythm as they build up an attack in the midfield. If an opponent is on a breakaway, be sure to switch to the defender closest to the ball and anticipate their running path to block them off.
Team selection is crucial. Germany (GER) typically has exceptional physical strength and shooting power, making them very suitable for beginners. In the semi-finals or finals, if the match is tied at the end of regulation time, it will go into stoppage time and potentially a penalty shootout. Staying calm and observing the direction of the opposing player's eyes (it's subtle, but there's a pattern during penalty kicks) is the key to winning the championship.
