Game Details:

The machine runs on Sega's C2 hardware board (similar to the Mega Drive console), and the graphics are incredibly vibrant. Players can choose from three flavors: Salt, Butter, and Curry.

After inserting a coin, Sonic and Tails appear on screen. Players must continuously turn the physical handle on the machine (resembling a crankshaft), causing Sonic to frantically stir the popcorn on screen. Dr. Eggman occasionally appears to cause trouble, requiring players to turn the handle even faster to defeat him. Interestingly, the outcome of the game doesn't actually affect the portion size or taste of the popcorn, but the excellent interactivity makes the wait far less boring. These units were once widespread in Japanese arcades and movie theaters, and some versions even made their way overseas.

Game Guide:

  • Crank the Handle Wildly: The only instruction is to turn that big handle. The faster you spin, the faster the on-screen heat bar fills up, and the more frantic Sonic's animations become. While this doesn't affect the popcorn you get, it will help you land a high score on the ranking screen.
  • Dealing with Dr. Eggman: When Dr. Eggman shows up and tries to lower the heat, don't stop—keep turning the handle at high speed. If you're fast enough, Sonic will activate a "Super Mode" and finish the process instantly.
  • Voice Easter Eggs: Listen carefully to the machine's voice clips; they feature original recordings from the voice actors of the Sonic series at the time. If you get a perfect clear on the minigame, Sonic will give you a big Thumbs Up.
  • Emulator Tip: If you're running this game on an emulator like MAME, remember to go into the control settings and map the "Turn Handle" command to a key you can press rapidly (or to your mouse wheel). Otherwise, you may find it difficult to reach the required "stirring speed."
