Pokémon FireRed is a classic role-playing game developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo for the GBA in 2004.
Released simultaneously with Pokémon LeafGreen, Pokémon FireRed is a landmark title in the third generation of the Pokémon series. Set in the iconic Kanto region familiar to veteran players, players take on the role of a young boy from Pallet Town who embarks on a journey to complete Professor Oak's Pokédex, defeat the eight Gym Leaders, and thwart the schemes of the villainous Team Rocket. This remake completely overhauls the graphics and sound of the original Game Boy titles, fully utilizing the GBA's color capabilities while introducing core battle systems such as Abilities, Natures, and Breeding. Furthermore, the game expands the world for both old and new players with the addition of the Sevii Islands, featuring a wealth of Generation II Pokémon to catch and brand-new post-game storylines.
The core gameplay revolves around type matchups and building a balanced team of six.
If you choose the highly popular Fire-type starter, Charmander, you will face a type disadvantage against the first two Gyms (Pewter City's Rock-type and Cerulean City's Water-type). It is recommended to catch a Mankey in the early-game grass (to use Fighting-type moves against Rock) or an Oddish/Bellsprout for support. Choosing Bulbasaur, however, will provide an easy path through the first two Gyms. Midway through the game, the Magikarp purchased from the salesman on Route 4 becomes a core physical powerhouse once it evolves into Gyarados at Level 20. Before challenging the Elite Four, be sure to head to the Power Plant to catch the Level 50 Legendary Pokémon, Zapdos. Its Thunderbolt can easily sweep Lorelei's many Water-type Pokémon as well as the Champion rival's Flying-type roster. By effectively using the Exp. Share to distribute experience and keeping your team's average level above 55, you can successfully beat the game and unlock the subsequent adventures in the Sevii Islands.
