Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland is a classic monster-taming RPG released by ENIX in 1998 for the Game Boy Color.
This title holds a special place in the hearts of Dragon Quest fans. Its core appeal lies in its "monster collecting" and "breeding system." The game features over 200 uniquely designed monsters, which players can recruit after battle by feeding them meat. The most addictive part is the monster breeding system: By combining two parent monsters that have reached a certain level, you can create offspring that inherit their parents' skills, have higher stat caps, and belong to a rarer species. You can even synthesize the ultimate bosses from past titles through specific recipes. The randomly generated "Traveler's Gates" ensure every adventure feels fresh, while the Starry Night Tournament in the Kingdom of GreatTree provides players with clear progression goals.
Don't get too attached to the wild monsters you recruit early on. The true essence of this game is that "each generation is stronger than the last." Once a monster reaches level 10, you should take it to the Shrine of Starry Skies to breed it as soon as possible. It's recommended to prioritize keeping skill sets that include "full-party healing" and "powerful attack spells." For example, breeding a Slime-family monster with a Dragon-family monster often results in a Dragon-type monster with excellent early-game stats.
When you encounter a monster you want, don't rush to attack. First, use items like "Sirloin" or "Ribs" from your inventory to increase its affinity. If you want to recruit a specific dungeon boss (some bosses are recruitable), it's advisable to stock up on high-quality meat, and make sure Terry has an empty slot in his party before the battle ends.
A monster's personality (e.g., Hothead, Cool) affects its behavior logic in auto-battles. Frequently issuing manual commands will change its personality. If your monster isn't following orders or is using skills inefficiently, you can buy books from the tavern to change its personality, or correct it through specific battle tactics.
The "Metal Slime" family, unlocked in the mid-to-late game, is the ultimate source of EXP. It's recommended to have a monster in your party with skills like "Hatchet Man" or "Metal Slash," as these are effective against the high-defense, quick-to-flee Metal-family monsters, allowing you to level up by leaps and bounds.
