China Gate is an arcade-style side-scrolling action platformer adapted from the classic Chinese novel, "Journey to the West."
Developed by the action game masters at Technōs, this title boasts an outstanding combat feel. The graphics were gorgeous for their time, with character designs that blend Japanese manga style and traditional Chinese elements. Players must not only jump across multi-leveled platforms but also fend off hordes of demons and monsters swarming from all directions. Each character has a unique attack style: Wukong wields his magic staff, boasting agile movements and a balanced attack range; Bajie has high attack power but is slightly slower; and Wujing possesses a longer reach. The game introduces a rich treasure system, where picking up scrolls or artifacts can boost a character's combat abilities or even unleash spectacular screen-clearing magic. The level design is extremely challenging, with a massive boss guarding the end of each stage, truly testing the player's mastery of movement and attack timing.
In this game, don't stay on the ground all the time. Using the multi-leveled platforms for jump attacks is the core strategy for avoiding being surrounded. When you're knocked away, try to adjust your landing with the joystick and buttons to reduce your recovery time.
The scrolls in the game are crucial. Each scroll you collect increases your attack power or range. Additionally, various food items drop throughout the levels to restore health. Prioritize clearing out high-threat enemies before picking up items to avoid getting ambushed.
All bosses have clear attack patterns. For example, the giant monster in the first stage will briefly pause before it charges—use this cue to jump to a higher platform to evade. Capitalize on the boss's recovery frames after its moves to land quick combos. Don't get greedy; adopt a "hit-and-run" tactic.
When the magic bar at the bottom of the screen is full, you can unleash a powerful screen-clearing skill. It is recommended to save this for when the screen is packed with enemies or when a boss enters a frantic bullet-hell phase, using it as a last resort for survival.
