Game Details:

This game was developed by Now Production and was first released on NES in February 1991 (Japanese version released in April). Compared to the first work, the game is completely original, retaining the action platform gameplay, and strengthening the "partner system": four kinds of dinosaurs (red Tyrannosaurus Rex, blue Tyrannosaurus Rex, Archaeopteryx, water dragon) each have their own characteristics, such as not slipping on ice, fire-breathing, flying, and accelerating in water. The levels are 8 islands, each with 7-8 small levels and Boss battles. The levels are short and support backtracking. The hunger indicator must be maintained during the battle, and death occurs if the health drops to zero. The item system allows dinosaurs and axes to be stored in the item bar, and equipment can be selected for each level. During the battle, as long as you master the rhythm of jumping and coordinate with riding partners and skateboards, you can experience a sense of exhilarating action.

Editor's Recommendation:

"Adventure Island II" is one of the representative works of Hudson Soft's platform action games. It combines the tense hunger system with exploration, and the mechanism of riding dinosaurs enriches the gameplay level and strategic choices. The short levels have moderate difficulty and concise content, combined with hidden levels, path selection, and item storage, allowing players to repeatedly challenge and explore. The operation responds smoothly and the art style is playful. It is an unmissable action masterpiece on the NES platform and is very suitable for retro players to experience.

Game Guide:

I. Item and Dinosaur Combination

  • Red Tyrannosaurus Rex (fire): breathes fire and can enter lava levels; suitable for scenes such as volcanic islands and deserts.
  • Blue Tyrannosaurus Rex (ice): stable and non-slip on ice, suitable for ice island levels.
  • Archaeopteryx (flying): can fly over obstacles, ideal for secret or vertical levels; weaker in air control.
  • Water Dragon (diving): accelerates underwater movement, the first choice for underwater levels.

Try to choose the dinosaur that matches the level environment before each level, and coordinate with the axe to form a stable output.

II. Stamina and Time Management

  • The stamina bar (hunger value) starts to be consumed at the beginning of the level. Picking up fruit, meat, and milk can replenish stamina.
  • Quickly advancing can save stamina, but don't give up collecting hidden rooms and items.

III. Hidden Collection Elements

  • Pay attention to whether the egg breaks when it makes a special prompt sound, and you have the opportunity to get a card (summon dinosaurs), keys to open hidden rooms, trampolines or shortcuts.
  • If you don't die with a dinosaur after clearing the level, the item will be saved and can be used for subsequent level strategy adjustments.

IV. Boss Level Skills

  • The battle rhythm in the Boss stage is slower, more like barrage shooting, observe the bullet rain and quickly counterattack.
  • If you die in the middle, the Boss will move to another location and you need to clear the level and pursue.

V. Advanced Suggestions

  • Proficiently switching dinosaurs can play a huge role in the path selection in the middle stage.
  • The difficulty of ice island and volcanic island levels increases sharply. Choosing blue/red dinosaurs and keeping skateboards can greatly improve the pass rate.
  • Using a skateboard can increase speed but lose control, so use it with caution in dangerous areas.
  • If you lose your partner in the Boss battle, you can use an axe to fill the position; find reinforcements in time when the axe is used up.
