Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon is a classic tactical RPG released by Sega for the GBA in 2004.
Developed by Amusement Vision and published by Sega for the Game Boy Advance (GBA) in July 2004, *Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon* is a comprehensive remake of the iconic Mega Drive/Genesis classic *Shining Force*. The story takes place on the continent of Rune, which faces impending doom from the resurrection of the evil Dark Dragon. As the protagonist, Max, players are tasked with assembling the "Shining Force"—recruiting warriors across various races to embark on a journey to save the world. Featuring completely redrawn high-resolution character portraits, enhanced battle animations, new playable characters, an innovative Card System, and expanded plotlines, this GBA remake stands as a definitive tactical RPG masterpiece for handheld consoles.
The Card System introduced in this GBA version is a crucial tactical mechanic. Character cards collected during battles or through exploration can be equipped to party members before combat for passive stat boosts, or activated directly during battles to unleash powerful special support effects.
Characters become eligible for promotion starting at Level 10, but it is strongly advised to level them up to the cap of Level 20 before promoting. Promoting at the maximum level allows units to retain superior base stat growth, resulting in significantly higher combat effectiveness in the late game.
Build your core lineup around Knights (high mobility), Flying Units (ignores terrain penalties), and Mages (AoE burst damage). Position your Knights as frontline tanks to absorb enemy aggro, allowing Archers and Mages to deal safe ranged damage from the backline. When fighting through choke points and narrow terrain, advance in staggered formations to avoid taking concentrated enemy fire.
When confronting high-defense bosses, buff your primary damage dealers first by having support units cast "Quick" and "Attack." Then, exploit the boss's physical resistance by relying on Mages to break through with spells like "Blaze," which bypass physical defense.
