Pokémon Ruby is a landmark role-playing game developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance in 2002.
Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire were released simultaneously, setting the stage in the Hoenn region, which was modeled after Japan's Kyushu Island. On a technical level, this generation utilized the GBA's hardware to achieve a qualitative leap in both graphics and sound. The plot follows the protagonist's adventure through Hoenn, where players must not only challenge eight Gyms and face the League Champion but also contend with the villainous "Team Magma," who plot to expand the landmass using the Legendary Pokémon "Groudon." This entry marked the debut of the Ability and Nature systems, as well as 2v2 Double Battles—features that fundamentally established the core framework of modern Pokémon battling.
The core gameplay revolves around type matchups and strategic moveset builds.
For the starter Pokémon, the Water-type "Mudkip" is highly recommended. Its final evolution, Swampert, possesses a Water/Ground typing, which not only grants immunity to Electric-type damage but also provides absolute dominance over Hoenn's challenging Electric, Fire, and Rock-type Gyms. When exploring the map, "HM slaves" are indispensable; it is suggested to catch a Zigzagoon (Linoone) or Marill, as they can learn the majority of field-clearing HMs such as Cut, Rock Smash, Strength, and Surf. The Electric-type Gym in Mauville City (the third badge) and the Psychic-type Double Battle Gym in Mossdeep City (the seventh badge) are two major difficulty spikes. When challenging the Mossdeep Gym, utilize Swampert’s "Earthquake" for field-wide damage paired with a teammate using "Fly" or "Protect" to secure an easy victory. When attempting to catch the box legendary Groudon, reduce its HP as much as possible and use "Hypnosis" or "Stun Spore" to inflict a status condition, which will significantly increase the success rate of Ultra Balls or Dive Balls.
