"Pokémon Red Full Color Hack" is a fan-made retro ROM hack that features a complete color overhaul of the original Game Boy classic, Pokémon Red.
"Pokémon Red Full Color Hack" utilizes the Game Boy Color's (GBC) advanced low-level palette technology to redraw and recolor the original "Pokémon Red," released in 1996, pixel by pixel and map by map. This ROM hack is more than just a simple filter; it provides precise, lore-accurate colored pixels for every town building, every patch of grass, and unique battle sprites for all 151 Pokémon. While fully preserving all the original's authentic storyline, glitches (such as the infinite item glitch), and retro battle mechanics, it allows modern players to relive where the series began with the most comfortable and beautiful visuals possible.
The core gameplay lies in the "ultimate retro nostalgic experience" and the "utilization of classic Generation I mechanics."
Starter Selection: Since it perfectly recreates Gen I mechanics, choosing Bulbasaur is the widely recognized fastest route for completing the game, as it has a type advantage against the first two Gyms (Brock's Rock-type and Misty's Water-type). If you choose Charmander, you will need to head to Route 22 to catch a Mankey and use Fighting-type moves to break through Brock's defenses.
Note on Gen I's Quirky Mechanics: Since this game perfectly preserves the hardcore and peculiar battle logic of the first generation, players can take full advantage of these "relics of the era." For example, in Gen I, the higher a Pokémon's Speed stat, the higher its Critical Hit ratio. Therefore, catching a high-speed Pokémon like Pinsir or Sneasel/Dugtrio and pairing it with moves like Slash (which has a high critical-hit rate) can achieve a nearly 100% crit rate.
Invincible Psychic-types: In Gen I, the Dark and Steel types had not yet been introduced, and Bug-type moves were extremely scarce. This makes the Psychic-type nearly invincible in the Kanto region. In the mid-to-late game, it is highly recommended to catch an Abra north of Cerulean City and evolve it into Alakazam (or catch a Hypno). With its terrifying Special and Speed stats, soloing the Elite Four and the rival championship battle will be a breeze.
