Game Details:

This title is one of the pinnacle beat 'em ups from the 90s arcade era. The game supports two-player co-op: Asterix is agile and attacks quickly, while Obelix boasts incredible strength. Konami made full use of the hardware's scaling technology in this game, and the effects when characters get knocked away are outstanding.

The game is filled with all sorts of comical details, like Roman soldiers getting knocked silly and wild boars suddenly dashing across the screen. The core mechanic is undoubtedly the "Charge Attack," where players spin their arms to power up and unleash visually stunning special moves. The game's stages span multiple locations, including a Gaulish village and Egypt. Every boss battle is filled with a comic book-style sense of conflict, making it one of the most cheerful and fun titles you could find in an arcade.

Game Guide:

  • Character Selection Tips: Asterix has a smaller attack range but is faster, making him ideal for outmaneuvering enemies with frequent repositioning (vertical movement on the Y-axis). Obelix's attacks have a wider reach, allowing him to control more enemies in front of him simultaneously. His unique "Grab and Throw" is also extremely powerful, making him a great choice for beginners.
  • Charge Attack Strategy: During lulls in combat, hold down the attack button to have your character spin their arms and charge up. A fully charged heavy attack not only deals massive damage but also creates a "bowling ball effect," knocking over all enemies in a line. However, be aware that your movement speed is reduced while charging, so avoid doing it when you're surrounded.
  • Interactive Scenery and Supplies: Throughout the stages, supplies will often appear, carried by Roman spies with sacks or brought by the little dog, Dogmatix. Make sure to prioritize picking up score items or food (like large hams) whenever you see them. The game's difficulty ramps up significantly in the later stages, so entering boss fights with high HP is crucial.
  • Boss Fight Positioning: When facing Roman generals or large mechanical bosses, never charge straight at them. Use vertical movement along the Y-axis to dodge their charges and ranged attacks. Look for the boss's recovery frames after they attack, then unleash a continuous combo like a three-hit string into a grab. In some stages, you can use environmental hazards (like rolling boulders) to deal extra damage to the boss.
