This game showcases a stunning level of system innovation. Unlike traditional action games where you can only pick up weapons, here players can destroy specific enemy units and salvage their parts to equip onto their own mecha. For instance, you can swap your arms for a Drill, Laser Sword, or Power Grabber; replace your legs with Treads or a Hover Unit; and even carry Missile Pods or a Flamethrower.
The impact feedback is incredibly solid, with heavy metal clangs and screen-filling showers of flying parts perfectly capturing the romantic spirit of the "Soul of Steel." The most exciting feature is the "Combination System" in multiplayer co-op: when three players pick up a specific item, their three mechs can combine into a world-destroying super robot. Depending on who initiates the combination, the resulting form and moveset will change completely. A design like this was guaranteed to draw a crowd in the arcades back in the day.
