Game Details:

This game is the sequel to Soul Edge, and its Dreamcast port famously earned a perfect 40/40 score from Famitsu. The game features a diverse international cast, from the Japanese samurai Heishiro Mitsurugi and the Chinese maiden Chai Xianghua to the wielder of the evil sword, Nightmare, with each character offering a completely unique weapon feel. Beyond its core versus mode, the series is also renowned for its incredibly rich single-player modes (like "Weapon Master" or "Libra of Soul"), which allow players to explore a world map RPG-style and even support in-depth original character creation. Its "Guard Impact" system adds an incredible layer of psychological depth to combat.

Strategy Guide:

  • Understand the '8-Way Run': Most newcomers tend to play it like a 2D fighter. Be sure to utilize the 3D space by sidestepping. Many powerful Vertical Attacks can be perfectly dodged with a simple sidestep, setting you up for a counterattack.
  • Master the Attack Triangle: The game's basic attacks are divided into: Horizontal Attacks (A), Vertical Attacks (B), and Kicks (K). Horizontal Attacks beat sidesteps, Vertical Attacks deal high damage but are easily dodged, and Kicks are typically the fastest, used to interrupt your opponent's startup.
  • Core Defense: Guard Impact (GI): This is a high-risk, high-reward maneuver. By pressing 'Forward + Guard' the instant an opponent's attack is about to hit, you can parry their weapon and leave them wide open for a counterattack. However, if you mistime it, you'll be left completely defenseless.
  • Ring Out: Never have your back to the edge of the arena! In Soulcalibur, knocking your opponent out of the ring is an instant victory. If you find yourself low on health, try to force your opponent towards the edge and use throws or moves with strong knockback (like Mitsurugi's 236B) to score a comeback.
  • Soul Charge: When your Soul Gauge is full, activating Soul Charge not only knocks the opponent back but also enhances your moves for a short period, even giving some attacks Guard Break properties. It's the key to mounting a comeback.
